SARASOTA - Within a span of seconds beneath the dark of a new moon, a 93-day hostage nightmare ended in sudden gunfire and the killing of nine Somali kidnappers in a remote scrub desert. Unable to tell how many other gang members might be lurking nearby, a number of Jessica Buchanan's U.S. Navy SEAL liberators piled on top of her as human shields while their colleagues secured the area.

 

Buchanan, 35, went on to share her extraordinary survival and rescue story with national media and in a book, “Impossible Odds.” Lately, however, the humanitarian aid worker who thought the world had forgotten about her in Africa back in 2012 has adopted a new cause. And on Monday, Buchanan — who helps organizations raise money for SEAL causes — will bring that message to Sarasota.
